MY FIRST GRANNY SQUARE BLANKET
I love when my friends randomly text me about making something fun. I was running an errand the other month when I got a text from a close friend asking if I could make her a blanket. She sent a picture of the simplest crocheted blanket: horizontal stripes and made completely in double crochet.
When I get requests like these, I want to stop whatever I'm doing and obsessively look for patterns that I think they'd like. She mentioned that she was obsessed with a blanket that Chris Hemsworth's wife made him for his birthday. When I saw that it was a granny square blanket, I found the perfect pattern!
I honestly just wrote this post so that I could show off my granny squares. My friend picked out the most beautiful color pallette, so it's been fun working in color for once. I usually stick to neutrals cause I'm still learning my style and what colors look good together. We went to Joann and played around with endless color combinbations. These are the yarns she ended up choosing:
This hefty project has been my background WIP while I work on mini projects in between. I usually like to drill through one project at a time, but this one feels different. That's probably because there is so much involved, and I have an idea of how much time it will take me. I have to make 289 squares, and each square takes about 10 minutes (which was surprisingly long to me when I timed myself). Then after that, I need to weave in the ends and block all the squares. Then stitch them altogether. Then crochet the border and decorative edging. Then wash the blanket. Then ship it to Seattle where my friend can cuddle it in all its glory.
Phew! It definitely sounds like a lot, but I am having fun. If you want to join me, I got the pattern for a few bucks on Ravelry. It's called the Sweet Dreams Baby Blanket by Mrs Moon. It was designed to be a baby blanket, but I adapted it to be around 5ft x 5ft. I'm a little more than halfway there! I'll update the post once I'm done.
